  During my final year of high school, I decided not to go to university right away but instead would spend a year volunteering in a children’s home for orphaned girls in Southern Africa. If I could pull it off, I knew it would make my university application stronger and it would vastly broaden my horizons. I also knew that if I failed, it could be a serious disappointment and a major blow to my confidence.

  Surprisingly, I breezed through the selection process. I was given a place on a 12-month overseas programme. But a major challenge lay ahead before I could even leave my country. I had to raise thousands of pounds. I couldn’t ask my family, relatives or friends for sums of money. I didn't even have a job or any savings to fall back on. I had to raise the money by holding charity events and asking strangers for donations.

  I featured in my local newspaper twice within 6 months, advertising events and competitions that people could take part in. I organized raffles and games that people paid to enter hoping to win prizes or money. Within 9 months of being accepted onto the programme, I had raised the money necessary to go overseas. I was extremely proud of myself.

  The year I spent abroad changed my life, as I knew it would. It opened a huge number of doors to me that would otherwise be closed. I am still riding off the back of that opportunity, and I know it is all down to my hard work fundraising that it happened at all.
