  Last summer I went on holiday without my parents for the first time. I was thirteen at the time, which is quite young to go away alone without parental supervision. But my parents arranged for me to go to a summer camp in Canada, where I would spend four weeks under adult supervision, doing activities with other kids my age.

  I stayed in one of twelve large cabins next to a big lake in Canada. There were five other girls living with me in my cabin, we were all the same age but none of them were Chinese, like me. Two were Canadian, two European and one was Israeli. So I had to speak to them in English, the only common language shared between all six of us.

  During the day, we spent most of our time out on the lake.  We worked in teams with the people in our cabin to solve tasks and we had classes in water sports, like kayaking,  canoeing, waterskiing and wakeboarding. We did a lot of swimming, but not always on purpose; we fell into the water a lot!

  I really enjoyed my trip to summer camp in Canada. I made a few life-long friends who I still keep in contact with, and I hope to see them again at the next summer camp. I am truly grateful to my parents for giving me the opportunity. I only hope they are prepared for me wanting to go back again and again every year!
