  Some people think that environmental problems are too big for individuals to solve. Others, however, believe that these problems cannot be solved if individuals do not take actions.

  Is environmental improvement beyond individuals' ability? Or should we count on every individual and believe that individuals' little actions can make a difference? Neither of the two questions have a simple answer.

  Individuals may be incapable, in their knowledge and means, of solving environmental problems. This difficulty is evident in China during the recent time when a number of cities are asking residents to sort out household refuse before it is tossed. Not until this policy have many residents realized their lack of knowledge about the classification. More difficult than the lack of knowledge, people's lack of means is a bigger problem. Hardly can individual citizens be technologically or financially capable of solving environmental problems, since those problems are usually on a large scale or stubborn or the solution costs colossal amounts of money.

  Recognizing the difficulties does not mean we are giving in to them. Little actions, such as tossing waste into the right bins, can reduce our impact on the environment; small changes, such as using fuel-efficient ways of transportation, can reduce our carbon footprints. In addition, although we are unable to improve manufacturing, which is a major source of pollution, we can choose products made of alternative materials whose use and disposal are easy on the environment, and as a result, businesses may become environmentally conscious about their production. Those efforts may seem insignificant on individual level, but they will lead to a tremendous change if we count more and more people in and let time prove the effect.
