  1. 本篇是关于两位同学的作业讨论，介绍挪威的人类学者、海洋生物学者、探险家Thor Heyerdahl(托尔·海尔达尔)。男生提议“start with the early life of Thor Heyerdahl”。“start with”意为“以……开始”。

  2. 随后他们谈到“... it’s unusual for children to develop their own values and not join in their parents’ hobbies; I’m thinking of how Heyerdahl wouldn’t go hunting with his dad? for example.”其中join in =take part in，意为“参加”;“go hunting”意为“打猎”。

  3. ...he preferred to learn about nature...，“prefer to”意为“更喜欢”。

  4. 托尔·海尔达尔结婚后同妻子学习了一些基本生存技能，原因是“they needed that knowledge in order to live wild in a remote location with few inhabitants, cut off by the sea(为了在人烟稀少，被大海隔绝的偏远野外生存，他们需要掌握这些基本生存技能)”。其中in order to(为了)表示目的，位置比较灵活，可置于句首，也可以放在句中。“cut off”意为“切断，阻隔”。

  5. ... that he happened to find on the island.其中“happen to”意为“碰巧，偶然发生”。

  6. 接着，女生开始讲托尔·海尔达尔的adult life(成年生活)：“... Heyerdahl spent ages studying the cloud movements, ocean currents and wind patterns to find if it was actually possible(海尔达尔花了很多时间研究云体运动、洋流和风向，以此推断波利尼西亚移民说理论的准确性)”。其中。“花时间做某事”的固定用法为“spend time doing sth.”。

  7. 然后又讲海尔达尔的研究在一段时间内中止过，原句为“And the poor guy suffered a bit at that time because the war forced him to stop his work for some years... ”。其中“force sb. to do sth.”意为“强迫某人做某事”。本句意为“由于战争，他被迫停止了研究工作……”。

  8. I think he sailed there in a boat made out of reeds.其中“sth. made out of sth.”是指在某样原材料上加工获得新物品，还可以看出原材料的样子，而当“of”换成“from”即“sth. made out from sth.”，往往是指从某原材料中提取一些物质用于加工成另一种东西。

  听前预测：定位词为hobbies、interested、youth。

  听前预测：定位词为reasons、island

  听前预测：定位词为Polynesian migration、east。
