  Education plays a pivotal role in almost every step of a person’s growth and development, whether it is talking about the acquisition of essential knowledge and skills, or about the establishment of values and the molding of personalities. However, with the rapid development of technologies, the population of electronic ways of education seems to be diminishing the importance of real teachers and thus it is assumed that compared to students in the past, young people today show less respect to teachers. But as I see it, technology can never take the place of real human interaction, especially in the realm of education. Even in the contemporary age, the respect people pay to their teachers is just as much as, if not more than, they did in the past.

  Indeed, the effectiveness and convenience of what technology has done in educating people today cannot be underestimated. Take a look at people around us, technologies provide unprecedented opportunities for them to get education on a daily basis. Young children are practicing their basic skills like counting and alphabet through interesting games on their tablets. College students are searching useful information and data for their papers through electronic archives. Working adults manage to juggle their jobs and further education, thanks to the convenience offered by online courses. All these commonplace scenarios may lead to a presumptuous conclusion that we do not need teachers any more. To me, however, this judgement is untenable, because it fails to take into account the essential role of education, which could only be undertaken by human teachers.

  In the first place, students still respect their teachers no less than they did in the past, because it is their teachers who impart knowledge most effectively to them. No technology is substitute for a well-experienced and loving teacher in the transmission of human knowledge and the cultivation of good learning habits. By clarifying abstract and abstruse concepts in a lively classroom atmosphere or devoting extra time to instruct students on a one-on-one basis, professionally well-trained teachers can not only help students better comprehend the knowledge, but also direct them to explore and interpret the meaning of things actively. For example, my high-school physical teacher Mr. Wu is one of the most inspiring teachers I have ever met. He not only gives us interesting and thought-provoking lectures but also takes us to field trips, kindling our curiosity to explore the world around us. Miss Ma, our English teacher, is very patient in helping us form good learning habits and effective methods of practicing a language. I benefit from my teachers in numerous ways and this is why I respect them as much as I could. On the contrary, if I only depend on educational Apps to study these subjects without the guidance of my teachers, I may quickly lose my direction in the massive sea of knowledge.

  Moreover, how could we stop respecting our teachers when it comes to the help they give us in shaping our characters? Teachers of noble character and high prestige also play a pivotal part in instilling moral values into students and prepare them to be responsible community members. Compared to indifferent technologies, teachers relate to students in a more human way. They can not only cultivate positive social behaviors and correct hurtful actions, but also set a role model and exert a subtle influence on the formation of students’ personalities and characters through their own words and acts. In this way, they can increase students’ awareness of moral standards and prepare young individuals into well-behaved and law-abiding citizens. As society is getting more complex, the challenge facing us is also becoming more and more complicated. Therefore, the role of education has changed. In the past decades, it was only to teach students essential knowledge and skills, but now it is to teach students how to understand the values of the society and give them a right direction to follow, so as to protect them from losing the purpose in the turbulent sea of social life. Therefore, teachers are still worthy of their students’ respect, for what they have done in helping their students form a well-rounded value system and prepare them for future success.

  Taking into account all of the foregoing discussions, now I could safely reach my conclusion: while it is true that technologies are playing a more and more significant role in educating people, the importance of teachers is not to be diminished, not only because we get the knowledge mainly from them, but also because we see them as a role model in our moral development.
